Re-writing the story – Part 3: Joining the Dots

One of my amazing clients recently described life as being in three parts; something which really resonated with me.

The first part of life could be described as learning how to fit in.  ‘Learning’ how to ‘be’ and what to ‘do’ to be worthy of love, connection and belonging.

The second part of life, for many, is about putting others’ needs before your own; especially if you get married and have a family or are trying to build a reputation and prove yourself in a corporate organisation.

The third part of life is potentially an opportunity to rediscover who YOU are.  Reconnecting with that inner child within you and remembering or discovering what actually makes YOU feel good; so you can be the best version of you and have a positive impact on those in your life too.

I’ve become more and more tuned into my intuition in recent years and am noticing the things I need to be paying attention to.  Art was a passion of mine at school and I’ve loved visiting art galleries ever since but I stopped doing any of my own art as soon as I’d passed my A Level; a belief that you couldn’t earn money doing art behind that choice, I think.

Since I became self-employed five years ago I’ve noticed the flutter of excitement I get in coaching sessions when I think it’ll help a client to get past the blocks of their conscious mind and connect with their unconscious mind by using a creative process; maybe Play Doh, Lego or drawing.  I’ve noticed how it can enable someone to connect with what’s really important to them and express how they are feeling about something, rather than what they are thinking about it.

Reflecting on what art gave me when I was doing it at school, I realised it was the same.  It allowed me to express myself and was a mindful experience, enabling me to be fully present and in the moment, tuning out the ‘noise’ in my head.

So acting on the ‘whispers’ from my intuition and ‘joining the dots’ I have signed up for an Acrylic Portrait workshop next year run by none other than one of my first, very talented coaching clients.

Do you listen to the messages your intuition ‘whispers’ to you?

Before I took the leap into self-employment I had been working for an organisation for 10 years, initially on a freelance basis and then as an employee.  When I was made redundant I wanted to acknowledge how grateful I was for all the friendships and opportunities for learning and growth which I’d received over the years.  I created a farewell slide-show set to music to express my gratitude.  The track I chose was “Hall of Fame” by the Script and Will-i-am.

I believe it is no coincidence that I heard that track four times last week on my car radio.  So what was the message my intuition was whispering to me?

Well, having just qualified as a Coach when I was made redundant, the significance for me at the time felt like a message to the world that you can be or do whatever you want in life and coaching can help you remove any blocks that might be in the way of you doing that.

Hall of Fame

Yeah, you could be the greatest
You can be the best
You can be the King Kong banging on your chest

You could beat the world
You could beat the war
You could talk to God, go banging on his door

You can throw your hands up
You can beat the clock
You can move a mountain
You can break rocks
You can be a master
Don’t wait for luck
Dedicate yourself and you can find yourself

Standing in the hall of fame
And the world’s gonna know your name
‘Cause you burn with the brightest flame
And the world’s gonna know your name
And you’ll be on the walls of the hall of fame

You could go the distance
You could run the mile
You could walk straight through hell with a smile

You could be the hero
You could get the gold
Breaking all the records that thought, never could be broke

Do it…

What I know now is that, of course, those words were for me too.  I can go the distance.  I can run the mile and I can walk straight through hell with a smile :).

Am I standing in the hall of fame?  Does the world know my name?

I’ve never been the loudest person in the room grabbing everyone’s attention but I do need to feel seen and I do need to feel heard; fundamental human needs which we all have.  So do I want the world to know my name?

Well a very strange thing happened when I asked myself that question last week?  I had an email from the CEO of the company who I am an Associate Coach for, saying she had heard nothing but praise for the work I was doing and the difference I was making to people’s lives.  So after I’d wiped the happy tears away and taken some deep breaths I realised that yes, I was standing in the hall of fame and yes, the world already knows my name; the part of my world where I am having a positive impact.   The part of my world who I want to leave a legacy with.

Are you ready to be YOU so the world knows your name?  What legacy do you want to leave?

None of us are getting out of here alive so what impact do you want to make on the world? What do you want people to say about you at your funeral?  What actions will you take today that will feed into what you want people to be saying?

You could be the hero
You could get the gold
Breaking all the records that thought, never could be broke

Do it…
