Have you ever had an experience in your life that felt so right but turned out to be so wrong (for you); an experience where things were not as they seemed (and felt) to you?
I’m still learning to really tune in to my intuition and often get it wrong…which is ok…but tend to trust when something feels good. Although, of course, we filter the information we take in through our senses and create our own version of “reality” and, as a result, can sometimes not hear the “whispers” from our inner knowing (our hearts or guts) that something isn’t quite as it seems.
But when the “reality” of the situation is so far away from what we feel, it can cause great confusion. And in my experience, that confusion can be really uncomfortable.
Human beings typically like certainty; a sense of control, as it helps us feel safe. We like to label things or create theories for things so we feel we understand them and can make sense of them. But when we label something and put it in a “box” so we can make sense of it, again, we are potentially tuning out the messages from our inner wisdom about what FEELS congruent or right for us.
My work as an Equine Facilitated Coach has highlighted the importance of congruence for me. When we communicate a clear, authentic sense of ourselves and our verbal and non-verbal communication matches, it creates safety for the horses. They don’t care if you’re happy or sad or angry or frustrated, they just want you to be congruent. And whether we are aware of it or not, people need exactly the same thing in order to build safe, trusting relationships.
Whilst it’s not someone else’s responsibility to make us feel safe (as adults) – that responsibility sits with us – it is our responsibility to listen to our inner wisdom and clearly communicate or challenge a situation that isn’t feeling congruent, and then make choices accordingly.
So when a friend sent me a message recently suggesting I “laugh at the confusion” I was experiencing, it made me reflect (it doesn’t take much, it’s what I do 😊).
I asked myself what was I hanging onto with regard to this particular situation? Why was I finding it hard to let it go and, therefore, still holding the confusion in my energy field? And why was it still painful and I wasn’t yet able to laugh at it…as laughing is quite simply my favourite state of being.
So in a quiet moment of reflection, I allowed myself to hear my intuition. I allowed that voice that is always there guiding me through life, when I come out of the noise of the mind and choose to listen to it. I allowed that voice to tell me that I needed to sit with the confusion. I needed to sit with it and FEEL it so that I could RELEASE it. Doh! Of course!
Every day I am supporting clients to feel and release stuck or suppressed emotion so they can create a safe space in their bodies to be in the present moment and FEEL, rather than avoiding parts of their ‘self’. Every day I am supporting clients to ‘lean into’ emotion that they are consciously or unconsciously resisting so they can let it go. And here was another subtle mirror for me that I needed to ‘lean-into’ the confusion caused by what I had perceived as incongruence.
I needed to sit with it and allow the emotion (energy-in-motion) to flow through me, rather than over-thinking and over-working my mind in an attempt to gain some clarity or certainty. I needed to FEEL and RELEASE the emotion so I could come back into the wisdom of my body and HEAR my intuition again.
I needed to release the confusion and put it into the box of experience and lessons learnt a.k.a the “f*ck-it bucket.
And then I could relax and laugh at the confusion.
Let me know if this resonates with you and you’d like to explore it further. Or if you’d just like to share some laughter or silliness, I’m up for that too 😊.
With love as always.
