When do you know you’ve made the right choice? And I mean, KNOW you’ve made the right choice for you?
When I originally trained as a Coach in 2014 I had no doubt this was what I was supposed to be doing with my life. This didn’t feel like a job, it felt like a purpose.
Don’t get me wrong, after I’d got the piece of paper that said I was qualified to go off and do what I really wanted to do for a career, a huge amount of fear and doubt kicked in. I had absolutely no evidence that I’d actually be any good at it!
But thankfully I found a group of Coaches to meet with regularly to support and challenge each other to learn and grow and develop. And what an invaluable and special network of people that turned out to be.
After one of those regular meetings where my fear and doubt had kicked in, despite the safe space it had been, I was given some feedback from a special lady. To this day, it is one of the most powerful pieces of feedback I have ever received. She said:
“I SOOOOOO wish I could put into your brain the things I see in you, and you could feel them really strongly. I wish you could notice the vibe you give off when you’re focussed on coaching.
Honestly Sarah, I feel really moved by the depth of your ‘positive regard’ when you are in the coaching space. When I described my challenge, in the spotlighting session, I could see so much in your face, a “I want to help you think”, “I will rack my brains until I find a way to help you think better”, “I want you to get a good outcome”, “I want you to be OK” all come across directly from you, in the moment.
And the lack of judgement. I felt I could say anything and you’d still be focussed on progress, not on the ‘what’.
You can’t fail to be successful as a Coach if you keep doing that, and when you let yourself believe that, that is enough. Can you deliver valuable coaching? Bloody right you can, because it comes out of your every pore. The care, the depth, the wish to help someone to progress, all back up with research and reading.
I think you have a responsibility to share your gift, so get on it!”
So fast-forward 9 years and every single week I can feel the fire in my belly and the love in my heart as I sit or walk or hang out with horses with clients and feel the essence of their heart and soul as I hold up the mirror for them, and encourage them to see through the crap they’ve learnt to believe about themselves; the mentally constructed fabrications and distorted perceptions of themselves.
And what a feeling it is when they begin to notice that that distorted perception is not the reality, it is not the truth of who they are. It is a story that was written for them and they can pick up a pen and write the remainder of the story for themselves.
So did I make the right choice to train as a Coach 9 years ago? Bloody right I did 😊.
Maybe it’s taken me 9 years to realise that sharing that feedback isn’t actually egotistical. Maybe it’s taken me 9 years to realise that if I actually tell people what I do and how much it means to me to help someone see their brilliance, then I could actually help more people and in the process do more of what I love!
What do you see when you look in the mirror? Do you really look into your eyes and SEE what is underneath the exterior? Or do you see the version of yourself you’ve learnt to be, to fit in with others and feel worthy of love and connection?
Get in touch if you’d like to know how Transformational Coaching can help you connect with the truth of who you are and what you are capable of.
With love as always.
Sarah xx
